On Friday, my baby turned two!
And we celebrated him with the most epic day. Both Rich and I took the day off work and devoted our day to time as a family. It was a busy day and I think that in toddler standards, it was perfect!
On the way home from work on Thursday, I called Rich and ran the idea of waking Buel up with balloons by him. He liked it, but laughed at me when I came home with two giant balloons. I hid them in our guest room and as soon as we heard Buel make noise in the morning, we ran in with balloons and told him Happy Birthday.
At first he was confused, but as soon as we showed him how they worked he loved them and played with them all weekend long. Best $16 I’ve ever spent! (I know, I judged myself too for spending that much on balloons but it was so worth it!)
We took the morning slow and eventually got B dressed in his two two train shirt. He had been begging to wear it for days and he was so excited. Little did he know I had even more planned for our day and we headed out to a breakfast spot 30 minutes away that I found online where a train delivers your breakfast! (Windhill Pancake Parlor for locals)
The restaurant was a huge hit and the staff was so accommodating! We settled in to the train counter and B watched in awe as the train delivered our water. He was in heaven and the distractions let us finish our meals and drink hot coffee which was a major parenting win!
As if eggs, sausage and mini pancakes weren’t enough, at the end of the meal our waitress sent a cupcake with a sparkler on the train and the staff sang a spirited Happy Birthday. He wasn’t shy and dug right in face first into the frosting, licked it all of and exclaimed, “all done!” Whatever you want, little man!
Our adventure tuckered him out and he zonked out on our drive home. Luckily I’m a master at the car transfer and he took a good nap until about 2:00 when I woke him up to take him to the doctor. Not my best parenting move, but having a day off meant Rich and I got to take him to his two year appointment together. After that, Rich took B to our friend Amy’s house for a quick haircut while I got things ready at home for a Birthday dinner.
At 6:00 Grandma, Grandpa and Uncle Johnny arrived with Pizza and we ate as a family with our two year old. After dinner he opened his presents and was excited to receive a new playhouse from Grandma and Grandpa, a Cubs hat from Dad and Grandpa, a new book from me and the hit of the night- Tickle Me Elmo from Uncle Johnny. As soon as he ripped the paper open he screamed, “ELMO” and wouldn’t let him go all night.
The day ended with Birthday cookies followed by lots of running around before bed. It was a great day and a tradition I hope to continue until Buel’s at school age. Having the entire day as a family was so fun and these moments are the ones we’ll remember. I’m going to soak up as many of them as I can!
