Over the Holiday season, I read MWF Seeking BFF, which inspired me to start my own Book Club. I had no idea how to start one, but I started with sending out a Facebook invite to 30 local girlfriends with the hope of having 6-8 ladies join my club. In the end, 13 people said yes and I was thrilled! Then I had to figure out how this club was going to work.
My first step was choosing the book, which was easy. The second step was finding a group, which I had. My third step was Googling, “how to start a book club” which brought a lot of complex results. So I decided to do it my way.
I found a long list of discussion questions on the book’s website and chose seven for us to discuss. When the ladies arrived at my house, I had the questions printed out and name tags since not everyone knew each other.
There was also a great spread of food. I provided cupcakes and the ladies brought more treats.
And, of course, there was wine. To help the conversation flow, obviously.
We sat in a circle, and when we passed around the questions I had each of the ladies introduce themselves. Then, I read the first question and things went from there. The book was a great one to discuss, because we could all relate and all of us had different but relatable experiences with friendships. Another thing I did was to make sure I invited friends from all of my different sub-groups, so that we spent time discussing the book and not just gossiping. That strategy worked perfectly!
At the end of the meeting, we all volunteered to host meetings each month for the rest of the year. I set these dates beforehand and posted them on our Facebook group, keeping them consistently on a Friday night near the end of the month. Each host is responsible for choosing the book and announcing it at the beginning of each month, choosing the discussion questions and hosting the meeting at their home.
The first meeting was a blast and I can’t wait for our February meeting. It seems like now that I got the ball rolling, this group should be easy to run and I look forward to next month!
Have you ever been in a book club? Have you ever started a book club? How many books do you read per month?
